View from the ruins of the Fort of Currah, on the River Ganges - 1803

Plate 21 from the third set of Thomas and William Daniell's 'Oriental Scenery.' Kara to the north-west of Allahabad on the river Ganges was an important political centre in mediaeval India, which declined when Akbar moved the centre of provincial government to Allahabad in 1583. A ruined fort and many tombs remain of its former glory. The Daniells were attracted by the picturesque ruins of this gateway, which dominates the composition here, while in the far distance may be seen their pinnace budgerow, their means of transport up and down the rivers, floating on the river Ganges.

I was always intrigued by History of Karra - Manikpur and visited the place last year, sadly this gateway is lost. But it was a memorable and nostalgic visit.

My ancestor is mail yemeni& jalaluddin Yemeni forefathers of hazrat husamuddin manikpuri came with shamsuddin altamash , & were bestowed with grants of land at kada& manikpur our properties included a teaching institution. Husamuddin manikpuri wrote a few books. Anis al ashiqueen , rafiq al arisen . The imperial gazeteer gives a n account of the buildings, tombs . History of such. Sufism in India, . Cal of a distant flute by Bruce lawrence projects the influence of these people ,and their contribution to amity during those times. Personally I have a lot of manuscripts , and related books about manikpur, named aftermanik chained who had a bro jai chand. Inscriptions to the affect are found on the ghats at the river.our family properties & buildings including the library are all but ruins as the family moved outing 1872& and all lands stein alien hands. God bless them.
