Glacier on banks of Weinghin [Hanle] river - 1860

Photograph of the glacier on the banks of the Weinghin (Hanle) river from the 'Crofton Collection: Topographical and architectural views mostly in India', taken by an unknown photographer in the 1860s. The Hanle River is a tributary of the Indus River that rises in the northern slopes of the Zanskar mountain range in eastern Ladakh. Two feeder streams emanating from glaciers join to form the main stream of the Hanle River; this photograph is of one of those streams. The main stream then follows a north by northwest course and joins the Indus near Loma. The glaciers have done much to shape the topography of the landscape by the creation of glacial lakes and moraines.
