During Asia Week New York last week, S.H. Raza’s “Village with Church” unfortunately took no bidders at Sotheby’s auction. The painting, which was surrounded by a lot hype and excitement, was estimated to sell for $2.5 million (Rs.12.5 crore). The painting came from the personal collection of the late John D. and Blanchette Rockefeller III.

In 2010, Raza’s painting Saurashtra (1983), which depicts the Gujarati coastal landscape, garnered Rs 16.3 crore ($3.49 million) at a Christie’s auction in London. This purchase set a record and made Raza one of the most expensive contemporary artists.

Great monograph on Raza's beautiful art - Bindu ( Space and Time in Raza's Vision) by Geeti Sen. Recommend a dekho. Excellent book. Also NGMA in Delhi sells Raza's large posters ( Bindu series) for Rs 30 . Raza at 90 migrated back from France to India. Such a nice person to meet. Happily autographs that Rs 30 poster, if you take it to him. You dont need a Rockefeller point of wealth to enjoy good art. Hey Raza's Bindu, Ankuran, Bharat, Ma, Tam Shunya & Spandan - those dots & lines in a splash of colours - they're itself a whole lesson in the basics of India art & its roots in spiritualism.
