Built atop Mathura's ancient Gokul/Krishna temple by Aurangzeb. Only way to get to this grand mosque today( heavily guarded now by the Army), is to walk over a railway line. Thanks to Jai Singh II of Jaipur, the deities of the Gokul temple were hijacked by him overnight (on the night of the demolition day), and re-established in a new temple at Jaipur.
Ratnesh Mathur true , it was a very common practice those days by Islam rulers
Not correct, Siddhartha. Aurangzeb was an exception, when it came to non-war destruction. Anyways, the point to note is the brilliance of Jai Singh II & the fact that the most important part of the temple, the deities , are still with us to admire & worship. Unfortunately, most folks living in Jaipur & even regular visitors to the temple have forgotten this history of the deities journey.
Very Taj Mahal'ish.
