This little article fails to mention that Charles Trevelyan was ' recalled ' (i.e. ' fired ') from his position as Governor of Madras by the British government over his recalcitrant stance on taxation. He had been surreptitiously ' briefing ' ( to use a modern expression ) the press in his own favour - and the whole affair became something of a ' political scandal ' - if a rather tame one when judged by contemporary standards.
