The partition of India تقسیم ہند was the partition of British India on the basis of religious demographics. This led to the creation of the sovereign states of the Dominion of Pakistan (that later split into the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the People's Republic of Bangladesh) and the Union of India (later Republic of India). The Indian Independence Act 1947 had decided 15 August 1947 as the appointed date for the partition. However, Pakistan came into existence a day earlier, on 14 August.
The partition of India was set forth in the Indian Independence Act 1947 and resulted in the dissolution of the British Indian Empire and the end of the British Raj. It resulted in a struggle between the newly constituted states of India and Pakistan and displaced up to 12.5 million people with estimates of loss of life varying from several hundred thousand to a million (most estimates of the numbers of people who crossed the boundaries between India and Pakistan in 1947 range between 10 and 12 million). The violent nature of the partition created an atmosphere of mutual hostility and suspicion between India and Pakistan that plagues their relationship to this day.
The partition included the geographical division of the Bengal province into East Bengal, which became part of the Dominion of Pakistan (from 1956, East Pakistan). West Bengal became part of India, and a similar partition of the Punjab province became West Punjab (later the Pakistani Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory) and East Punjab (later the Indian Punjab, as well as Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). The partition agreement also included the division of Indian government assets, including the Indian Civil Service, the Indian Army, the Royal Indian Navy, the Indian railways and the central treasury, and other administrative services.
The two self-governing countries of India and Pakistan legally came into existence at the stroke of midnight on 14--15 August 1947. The ceremonies for the transfer of power were held a day earlier in Karachi, at the time the capital of the new state of Pakistan, so that the last British Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten of Burma, could attend both the ceremony in Karachi and the ceremony in Delhi. Thus, Pakistan's Independence Day is celebrated on 14 August and India's on 15 August.
2 year planned partition people movement was just completed in 2 months resulted in lakhs of deaths. Pakistan thinks India cheated Kashmir but same time hindu majority Lahore was skipped from us at last moment.
I have a strong objection on the word "Birtish India"....! India was not the property of the Royal femelies of Birtishers. The correct word may be the "Birtish rulled India".
All this discussion& discourses r only of academic significance .Partition cannot be undone now..It was self importance & egoism of leaders which became instrumental in bifurcation of India.
There has to be a common enemy for Pak and India to come together..is that poverty, terrorism and if necessary China..! The mindset has to change there has to be a paradigm shift in our thinking..! Which i believe this government is at least thinking different unlike the dullard , unimaginative policies of the past !
I may not accept, that India was partitioned on religion basis.....a muslim leader took a portion which eventually became a religious state called pakistan
When India was divided on religion basis, India should have been Hindu India ! Not secular India !
Sad days for the subcontinent to be brutally partitioned.
All this was British game play.
A valuable lesson unlearned
I would like to share my reply to one gentleman on my remarks for a post on Mahatma Gandhi. With due respect, sir, you know very little about our History. Please take sometime and read books like India's struggle for Independence, Freedom at midnight. Gandhi never agreed for partition. It was Jinnah and the people. Yes, the people. While Gandhi was fighting against British, people were fighting each other due to religion. Muslims were already killing Hindus. Due to so much violence, Nehru and Patel had no other choice but to agree with the partition. Please, read about Gandhi from good books instead of believing propagated story! My reply I agree that I have very little knowledge of history n I have never read the books mentioned by you. My knowledge is based on newspaper articles, movies, documentaries n what my parents who were the real victims of partition told me. Will u deny that both Jinnah n Nehru were groomed by Gandhi n both had their political ambitions?Partition was not the partition of whole country n in fact it was partition of Punjab n Bengal otherwise how u can expect huge no of Muslims living in South of India to go to thousand miles away to Pakistan with literally no transport available at that time. Pakistan was created for Muslims n Hindus were literally removed from both East n West Pak than I wonder why all Muslims were not asked to go away from India as practically it was impossible n Gandhi n other leaders patronised them.Perhaps it was a cruel game played by the British n Gandhiji who was a big leader n had a big say just could not help it n remained a mute spectator. As he was very fond of observing fast unto death I wonder why he did not threatened to go on fast till death to Nehru, Jinnah n all others who wanted partition. I firmly believe come what may Gandhiji should never repeat never ever agreed for partition which resulted in huge loss of life due to mad bloodshed, atrocities on women n children as many were raped n became orphans n homeless, displacement of families n becoming refugees resulting in failure of his theory of non violence apart from 3 Indo Pak wars, Kargil battle n this never ending Kashmir headache. However, as suggested by u I will read more books but I wonder whether authors r not biased n truly write the facts or merely write to sell their books, even at times autobiographies r ghost written.
Uncalled for partition
Such a big decision was taken to divide India but no public opinion was taken..only few leaders took the decision which affected fate of lakhs of people ..

India is better off that it let go majority of muslim population in 1947. Its a blessing in disguise that we skimmed stupid islamic troublemakers long time ago. I propose another division where the rest of Indian muslims should go and practice their Islamic rituals not here in Hindu rashtra not any more.
