View of the ghat and ruined temple of Walkeshwar, near Malabar Point, Bombay - 1850.

Watercolour painting of the ghat and ruined temple of Walkeshwar near Malabar Point in Bombay by William Carpenter (1818-1899) between 1850 and 1856. Inscribed on the reverse and on the mount is: 'Walkeshwur'.

Walkeshwar Temple was originally built by the kings of the Silhara dynasty who ruled Bombay from the 9th to the 13th centuries. Having been destroyed by the Portuguese, the temple was rebuilt by Rama Kamath in 1715. It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Walukeshwar (Lord Shiva) or Sand Lord.

Subbiah, I'm curious to know If British also actively took a part in destroying/ desecrating Hindu Temples?

Manish : I have not really read or heard anywhere about the British desecrating or destroying the Hindu Temples. But from what I have learnt from the FB discussions here is that... there might have been a few cases which have ocurred in times of war and other such instances. To give credit where it is due....they have infact preserved and protected many of the Indian treasures till date and have accorded the respect, they truly deserve.

Thanks Subbiah, I'll definitely read up more on it

Religion is the opiate of the people, why such obsessions for the material things which denote culture and make you a frog in the pond rather than being a fish in the ocean.
